What is Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows doctors to examine the inside of the uterus using a thin, lighted instrument called a hysteroscope. It helps diagnose and treat various uterine conditions without the need for major surgery.

What is Hysteroscopy?

  • Diagnostic Hysteroscopy – To diagnose problems inside the uterus.
  • Operative Hysteroscopy – To treat conditions like fibroids, polyps, septum, or adhesions during the same procedure.

Symptoms Requiring Hysteroscopy

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Heavy menstrual periods
  • Postmenopausal bleeding
  • Difficulty in conceiving (infertility evaluation)
  • Repeated miscarriages
  • Presence of fibroids, polyps, or adhesions

Procedure / Treatment

During hysteroscopy, the hysteroscope is gently inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. The procedure may be diagnostic (to examine and confirm a condition) or operative (to treat issues like removing polyps, fibroids, or adhesions). It is usually performed under local or general anaesthesia and is a daycare procedure with quick recovery.

Prevention

While hysteroscopy itself is a diagnostic and treatment tool, maintaining good reproductive health, regular gynaecological check-ups, and timely treatment of infections or hormonal imbalances can prevent complications that may require hysteroscopy.

  • Minimally invasive with no cuts
  • Less pain and discomfort
  • Short hospital stay
